They are easy to make. The "bill" is a modified half circle - two sides of fabric with a stiffener in between. The back is a gathered up circle (much larger than you'd think necessary) and the little skirt at the back is a straight piece - although there are modifications. It ties under the chin, where the brim and the skirt come together is where the ties originate.

We read these books, and my daughters HAD to have bonnets. Let me warn you that a small child, running around, wearing a bonnet is practically blind. My girls ran in to things so often - we took to folding back the brim so that they could see!

Bonnets are great fun, though.

Cheers!
RosemaryRosemaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13919009138145168313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6015463992731021365.post-86765780288395498402009-01-31T14:13:00.000-08:002009-01-31T14:13:00.000-08:00They're called bonnets, search for patterns they'r...They're called bonnets, search for patterns they're easy to find -
try http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/trailofthe49ers/bonnet.htm or http://www.motherearthnews.com/Do-It-Yourself/1978-07-01/Make-Your-Own-Sunbonnet-in-Less-Than-Two-Hours.aspxsamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10309069824997740570noreply@blogger.com
